Most of them were painted by Francesco Londonio (1723-1783), one of the most important Lombard artists of the eighteenth century, specialized in nativity scenes, rural scenes and depictions of animals.
New acquisition of the Museo Diocesano, thanks to the donation of Anna Maria Bagatti Valsecchi, the collection comes from the Cavazzi della Somaglia collection, in the Villa Gernetto in Lesmo, and is probably one of the few eighteenth-century Lombard nativity scenes of this type. The work was originally intended to be set up during the Christmas period in a hall of Villa del Gernetto in Lesmo, Brianza, purchased in 1772 by Count Giacomo Mellerio (1711-1782), where Londonio used to spend long periods of holiday.
During the nineteenth century, the Mellerio heirs, when the importance and rarity of the complex became clear, had the silhouettes within oval or rectangular frames which were used as permanent decoration for the halls of the Brianza residence. The Gernetto nativity scene, known to critics, is cited in historiography and in all publications dedicated to Francesco Londonio and the nativity scene in Lombardy.

An initial, minimal conservative intervention made it possible to present the new nativity scene today; However, the work requires more complex restoration work, for which it will be necessary to raise funds. For this reason, the Regional Council intends to associate itself with this exhibition event in the recovery, promotion and valorisation of this significant work initiated by the Museo Diocesano in Milan, offering the visibility of the major Italian regional assembly.

Next to the Londonio nativity scene, in the foyer of the ground floor of Palazzo Pirelli, a terracotta high relief depicting a “Nativity with Angels” probably by a 17th century Northern Italian sculptor, also coming from the Museo Diocesano in Milan, is also exhibited. Nothing is known about the history of this work, which came to the Museum from a private collection: the recent restoration (2013) highlighted two previous interventions, which took place in an unclear era. The panel is made up of three pieces worked and fired individually and then assembled with terracotta seals and an iron staple. The scene is set in a fragmentary hut supported by imposing ruined columns that are lost in the clouds, according to a model widely spread in northern Italy. The Holy Family, on the left, appears almost in the background compared to the adoring angels and cherubs that animate the scene.

Francesco Londonio (Milan 1723-1783), author of the extraordinary nativity scene, is one of the most important Lombard artists of the eighteenth century and entirely dedicates his activity to genre painting, specializing in bucolic themes, with scenes of peasant life, animals and actual nativity scenes. The local realistic vein, of which the “painting of reality” is an expression, is however filtered by the artist’s serene and dedicated fully eighteenth-century sensitivity with refined results that are highly appreciated throughout Lombardy. Londonio thus became one of the most appreciated painters in Lombardy and counted among his clients the ancient Milanese nobility, such as the Borromeo, local entrepreneurs and large landowners recently ascribed to the nobility, such as the Greppi, Tanzi, Alari and Mellerio, for whom he created the Nativity scene on display.

The Lombardy Regional Council, in collaboration with the Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini, Councilors Association and AICCRE – Italian Association for the Council of Municipalities and Regions of Europe, presents in the event space of Palazzo Pirelli in Milan one of the…

["post-2940","mostra","type-mostra","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

Londonio.
