Exhibition
Created by the World Photography Organisation and acclaimed worldwide, the Sony World Photography Awards are one of the most important events in the international photography sector. Free and open to all, and now in their 16th edition, the Awards offer a vitally important view of the world of contemporary photography and give artists, both established and emerging, the extraordinary opportunity to exhibit their work. They also provide an occasion to recognise the most influential photographers in the world.
The Sony World Photography Awards are promoted by the World Photography Organisation and Sony and comprise the Professional, Open, Youth and Student competitions. Before being displayed in the rooms of the Museo Diocesano, the winning works of the Sony World Photography Awards 2023 – presented last April during the international ceremony in London – were exhibited at Somerset House in London.
Among the works on display is “Our War” by the Portuguese photographer Edgar Martins, overall winner of the Photographer of the Year title with his highly personal tribute to his friend and photojournalist Anton Hammerl, killed during the Libyan civil war of 2011. Also on show is the work of Alessandro Cinque, winner of the Sustainability Prize – created in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures’ Picture This initiative – which rewards the stories, people and organisations whose actions pursue one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Also on display are the works of the other Italian photographers who came second and third in various categories of the Professional competition: Noemi Comi and the duo Edoardo Delille and Giulia Piermartiri, 2nd and 3rd place in Creative; Bruno Zanzottera and Fabio Bucciarelli, 2nd and 3rd place in Landscape; Andrea Fantini and Nicola Zolin, 2nd and 3rd place in Sport.
