Christ Crucified
The crucifix, missing both arms and without the cross, can be traced back to the area of Western Liguria for numerous details such as the raised and half-closed eyeballs, the half-open mouth, the hairstyle with sculpted twists, the anatomical constitution and the U-shaped loop of the loincloth with a complex knot. The work comes from the Marcenaro Collection, on deposit by the Cariplo Foundation.

The Marcenaro Collection, on loan to the Diocesan Museum from the Cariplo Foundation since 2004, forms the most significant part of the collection of historic art bequeathed to the Foundation in 1976 by Caterina Marcenaro (Genoa, 1906–1976). An art historian and a leading figure in the restoration and renewal of Genoa’s museums as director of the city council’s Fine Arts Office, Marcenaro transformed Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso. At the same time, she built a personal collection consisting mainly of paintings and sculptures, guided by a distinct taste for predominantly religious subjects and portraiture.
